(Historical Notes: By comparison, let’s think back to those Astrid comics again.  The underlying gag THERE is basically the same as it is here. “Geez, isn’t this costume ridiculous?”  Except I think those work better.  They’re still not perfect, but they do make good on their intentions in several ways which I think these don’t.  For one thing, those comics keep things more in-universe, and avoid the blatant meta aspect.  If Astrid dresses in a ridiculous manner, while also behaving in a ridiculous way, and Layla calls her out for being ridiculous, then the ridiculous art trends being invoked do get swept up in the mockery by implication, but it’s far less explicit.  More importantly, the self-defeating paradox of getting myself as the artist involved is removed, and thus can’t drag down the rest of the writing…)
