For the record, I totally swiped the menu, like everything else, from Final Fantasy, so the bar on the side presumably indicates how much time is left before each character can act again, not a health bar.
That said, is IS a fair question how you’d actually be able to play as Avatar in a game and ever lose health. It’s like playing as Superman in a game where he can get killed by some street thug punching him. This character is not conducive to standard game play mechanics!
