There was so much good speculation about why this was in the regular comments I feel like I ought to just copy-paste it all here…
It’s truly staggering how often creative decisions are borne out of perpetual technical screw ups like this.

@hovertext- obviously, being budding mad scientists, they invented a new kind of fire, that’s only slightly lukewarm, but otherwise works the same as regular fire – it got out and burned down the entire neighborhood, but nobody was hurt since the fire itself could be touched – even if the whole room and the exit door are on fire they could just walk out through it. But it still burned down all the buildings.
(It actually turned out to be really useful for a lot of things, and most of their current exploits are funded by the royalties they’re still getting from the patent on lukewarm fire)
