Layla’s Cosplay Quest – page 13
(Historical Notes: …and that brings us back around to the Astrid stuff again. I would argue that, most of the time, seeing Astrid in a weirdly revealing outfit is a more successful comedic exercise than just about anything in this set of pictures because, more often than not, Astrid just looks kind of funny in general. Like, totally separated from the “Huh, that’s a lot more boob than we usually see in this comic” element, Astrid is usually just fairly outrageous-looking thanks to her big hair and over-done makeup and the fact that those revealing dresses are also usually over-elaborate and ostentatious. The goal is usually to get a laugh just on that surface level, which hopefully will help any intended sub-text or satire to land entirely on its own. Compare that to Layla here, who just looks like she could be the mascot to any number of food brands. There’s nothing inherently funny about this, which botches the whole operation right from the start…)
